A basic console table has only 9 segments – 4 legs and rails in addition to a top. One can start with a beginner’s toolbox consisting of a healthy mix of portable power tools and hand tools. Besides being easy, the design enables optimum use of everything contained in the woodworking guide. And to top it all, your console table is ready sooner than you think. Just by learning a few basic moves one can hope to be accomplished in the art of creating your very own unique console table. Incredible!!! Not really, until you’ve had a go at it.

A quick sketch to design the shape of the console table – for e.g. legs tall enough to allow one to slip shoes underneath, a low shelf for decorative items and another shelf to hold a few drawers topped with well-sanded untreated wood board. Select wood of correct width and thickness for your console table. Use dowels and a wood drill bit and wood glue to assemble the parts. Cutting the various parts to required length, use a pencil mark to delineate on the uprights where the shelves need to go. A gluing doweling instruction guide to drill holes for the dowels is available.

Squeeze a little glue in the holes of the uprights and insert the dowels. Assemble the uprights by squeezing glue into holed drilled in the shelves. Finally assemble the top board by placing in on top of the uprights. Make sure the console table stands perfectly straight before placing weights. After allowing a standing time of 12 hours, sand all the surfaces and edges of the console table. Order cane drawers or use recycled hardboard drawers and fix them with nail back drawer stops leaving some margin. Choose a finishing say two coats of linseed oil and whoa your console table is ready to use.
