Have you been wondering how to add antique touch to your home? Bring in a bit of the old world grandeur? What you can do is get a drop leaf table. This is a useful and elegant invention which you will absolutely adore. First constructed in 16th century England, these tables endured through the centuries and remain an extremely classy choice for any home. There is an intelligent mechanism built in the table, so you can use half the table but also expand it to full size if many guests come over. There is usually a hinge in the centre of the table and the ‘leaf’ and the side of the table can be dropped down or propped up if required.

So the drop leaf table is almost a two in one table because it can work as a small size table as well as a larger sized one! It is perfect for a small gathering at your place with a few friends and family members-Or when friends drop in unexpectedly for dinner and you need a couple of extra seats. This table is just one of the most sensible purchases to make because even though you save space, you always have the option of increasing the number of people who can fit their plates in the table!

You can buy a drop leaf table in all sorts of shapes and sizes as well as colors. Wood remains one of the most commonly used materials for constructing these tables but you can also find some tables made of metal. Pressed wood and other kinds of wood substitutes are also used to make these tables. You can choose the size you want depending on the size of the room where you are going to place it. You can also choose from square, rectangular or spherical tables. You also have an option on the wood being used or the wooden veneer being used- oak, pine, cherry, mahogany and so on.

Some of the more expensive tables have a lot of carvings and inlay work but plain pressed wood tables are going to be less expensive. For instance, you can have a pine wood veneer drop leaf table by ordering a replica of the solid pine wood table. It looks very similar and costs a lot less. These tables can be bought for $ 100 to $ 200 but solid wood tables cost upwards of $ 400.

Are you wondering what is a drop leaf table exactly? It is a proper looking table but with just a bit of a twist! While the centre of the table is fixed, it has two hinged sides which can be ‘dropped’ or folded down. Sometime, the table may have a hinge in the centre so that one side is always fixed while the other can be propped up or kept folded. These kinds of tables have been known to exist since the 16th century when they were first made in England. These early tables were often made of oak and had a simple Gothic style but later on, carvings and inlays with geometric patterns became popular.

One of the best things about this kind of a drop leaf table is it works as a great space saver. If there are only a few people having dinner, just keep the leaf down. But if a couple more drop in, you can just extend the dining table and have dinner all together. So it occupies as much as a normal small table but it can be extended to almost twice its length! The leaf is generally supported by a bracket when it is in use but in some cases, the leaf may be supported on legs that are kept concealed in the centre and can be pulled out. Such a variation of the classic bracket style is known as a gate leg table and this was also popular in 16th and 17th century England.

But don’t think you can only use a drop leaf table for dining purposes. You can buy drop leaf kitchen tables or even drop leaf coffee tables. These tend to be a bit higher and narrower than the dining tables. There are also banquet drop leaf tables for catering houses and restaurants. Choosing the size of the table will depend on the number of people who have meals together on a daily basis. And the space you have available is also a point to be considered.

If you want an antique Jacobean or Elizabethan drop-leaf table, you should check out the antique stores and auction houses but be wary of frauds. If you like the look of antiques, you could place an order with furniture companies who can reproduce it for you at much cheaper rates. You can buy these tables for about $ 100 and more.

White tables have a universal appeal and attract attention of one and all. The only limitation being that one needs to keep it spic and span. Even the smallest speck of dirt is enough to mar its perfect beauty. So, only one who is a perfectionist would be advised to choose a white table, especially as dining tables. For practical purposes, one would be better off to use a white table where its ornamental value is more than its functional need. This is for those whose lifestyles are busy. For those who have the time and means at their disposal, they can indulge in their tastes to procure and maintain more than one white table or furniture pieces as their hearts desire.

The White House – home to the most powerful person in the world viz. the President of the United States of America is eloquent to voice the power of the color white. The White House has many rooms representing the theme of colors. To name a few – the Blue Room, the Golden Room, the Green room, and so on. The colour white which actually blends all the colors of the rainbow namely vigour when vibrating at a very high speed when used to furnish one’s home adds an undeniable power. Taj Mahal the seventh wonder of the world is white.

Furniture stores specialize in white furniture whether for the foyer, drawing room, lobby, bedroom, or bathroom. They are available in ranges like the New England Range, The Hampton’s, etc. Each further having a multiple variety in styles to suit all tastes whether modern, antiques, hi-tech or the maverick. As for sizes, the range is exhaustive and one can even go in for a customized white table.

The white table range includes not only the dining table, the kitchen tops, the ubiquitous console tables, dressing tables, center pieces, and study tables. Other white table variations include peg tables, storage tables, bedside tables, side boards; drop leaf tables, study tables and desks, computer tables, chest of drawers doing double duty as tables too, toy boxes serving as tables for toddlers, and adolescents, and so on.

The designs, materials used, and styles differ depending on the styles of homes and the rooms they are placed in– be it the kitchens, dining rooms, children’s rooms or nurseries, bedrooms, etc. Hospitals usually have all their furniture and furnishings in white symbolic of cleanliness and its recuperative power. Point to be noted, tables of any colour generally are draped in white or beige tablecloths, so, why not stick with having a white table in the first place.

Land is one of the natural resources which are limited. As the planet earth is inundated with the burgeoning species viz. man, space available for habitats or homes is fast becoming a most expensive affair. Homes of necessity are becoming smaller and space management to avoid clutter and make everyday life convenient and smooth is imperative. Furniture like folding sofas or drop leaf tables is in demand.

A drop leaf table, generally circular, comprises of a fixed central section with two semi-circular halves joined by hinged leaves and supported by articulated arms, legs or brackets. Usually used for bedside meals by the English, its popularity has spread worldwide and is now commonly known as the flap and elbow table.

Although designed for occasional use, a drop leaf table is going to be a norm because of its space saving ability and easy portability. A distinct style of the drop leaf table is the Pembroke tables possibly earning their names from Henry Herbert who was the 9th Earl of Pembroke and was an amateur architect but a connoisseur of note. This type of table is equipped with two drawers and flaps on either side. The legs of the English styled drop leaf table are sustained and propped up by cross-shaped stretchers.

Furniture items that fall within the purview of being a drop leaf table are the Pembroke tables, butterfly tables, bracket tables and sofa tables. The sheer variety available on offer will be evident from the list of drop leaf tables outlined hereafter. There is the Jofran Height Doble in dark Chianti, butter specialty in cherry wood, halo styles Windermere Barley sugar twist, Westbrook pub table, hills dale tailored dining table, sitcom Taylor Collection wood bar table, liberty creations, ligo country classics, and Sabrina 5 piece dining table set.

You can also pick the medium oak round double drop leaf table, living accents kitchen breakfast cart, Francesco drop leaf found breakfast table, Hammary low country dining table, Linon home decor tavern pub set, Magnusson Montgomery rectangular sofa table, international concepts in black and small, and/or a riverside furniture medley dining table set. The butter specialty metal works, homelegance celerie 5 piece dark oak contemporary dining table and four stools set, Waymar tabletop, Powell furniture Jamestown landing accent table, etc, are popular too.

Going by the variety expounded above, one wouldn’t be lost for want of choices. The drop leaf table variety was initially found mostly in England; their origins dating back to the latter part of the sixteenth century and presence of the Elizabethan and Jacobean variety are very much evident and for modern society, it’s a boon now.

Drop Leaf Dining Table

A drop leaf table is a table that can either expand or subtract in size. It is a regular table with a base or legs and a top. The only difference is that a drop leaf table’s top is usually in three parts. The two parts on the sides have the ability to drop, making the table smaller in size. This could prove to be very useful in many cases as it can save you space on one hand and on the other hand, when you need to, you can expand your drop leaf table and you could easily use it as you would use any other table.

Drop leaf tables are very useful when it comes to having people coming over at your house for dinner. Imagine a situation where you have a table that could accommodate 6 to 8 people but you want to invite far more than that, let’s say 12 to 14. Remember that we always need to add two extra people to the amount of people that we think are going to attend just to be on the safe side. In this situation, you need to accommodate at your place 6 more people than you are able to, so what could you do? This is a typical example when a drop leaf table can prove to be extremely useful. The reason behind this is that since they become smaller by dropping the leaves on the sides. They are also easier to move around. This means that it is much easier for you to borrow such a table from a friend or neighbor, in order to organize your event since, since it will be much easier for you to transfer it from his place to yours.

Drop leaf tables also has another feature that I think is very important. Think about a situation where you want to accommodate only 3 extra people at your house than you normally can. Again what you should do is to borrow or rent a table and some chairs from someone in order to be able to host your event. The problem here is that it is very rare that you will find a table which is just large enough to fit three people. In this case, a drop leaf table is what you are looking for. Since you don’t want the full potential of the table, you could always just drop just one leaf or even both leaves. If you think about it, a drop leaf table can be suitable for 2,3,4,5 or 6 people depending on its shape and size.

So now you know what to do when you don’t have enough space on your table for a few extra guests. A drop leaf table can really make your life easier in that way and they can also look amazing.
