There are several proven methods on making a house or any other place for that matter look great. Every individual regardless of social or financial status desires a home that can be proudly displayed to visitors. Apart from this, we also want a place that we can look forward to returning to after a long day outside. This is what gave birth to interior decoration—the role of aesthetics in the home and any other setting. So how does a console table fit into this picture?

Furniture has and will always play a vital role in the aesthetics of any home. Okay, let’s carry out a simple exercise. Pause for a second and close your eyes. Try and recall what your home looks like. Narrow this picture down to a room in the house (preferably the living room). Now, remove the furniture in the room and see what the room will look like. The picture looks drab right? So you can truly appreciate the aesthetic and functional role of furniture in the home better. Let’s get back to the console table.

Console tables have long been used as home furniture and like any other furniture, they have two roles: aesthetic and functional. By virtue of their design, they are very elegant and greatly enhance the look of any room beautifully. The functional role of a console table can be linked to its use as a platform for holding or displaying objects such as artifacts and souvenirs (photo frames, figurines, and the likes). Also, console tables often come designed with drawers and cabinets and they double as storage facilities. I can categorically say that every home stands to benefit greatly both aesthetically and functionally by getting a console table.

In order to decorate your home with console furniture however, you need to be aware of certain key points. Since console tables differ in terms of material, shape, color and size, it is necessary to determine what will best fit into your home. This means that you must ascertain the available space in your home in order to get the appropriately sized table. Also, what material and color will blend in best with the existing décor in the home? Where is the best location to prominently display the console table? Answering all these questions will guide you in getting the best table that will enhance your home décor.

Console tables combine style, elegance and functionality and have been in existence for several centuries. They have a rich history –according them the status of collectors’ items –and have metamorphosed from the earlier two-legged version to the present day four-legged tables.

These tables make any room where they are found look elegant. There’s this air of classiness they bring to any room they are placed in the home. Additionally, they are very good as storage facilities since they usually come equipped with shelves, cabinets and drawers. Of course, you already know this which is why you’ve already bought or on the verge of buying your own console table.

A quick advice for those who are about to purchase their own console tables: be sure to get one that will last you well, serving its purpose. Getting this is a function of considering several factors such as: what is your taste? What are your needs? What is your budget? What will blend in with your home décor…? I love these tables and can continue talking about them, but hey I don’t want to lose the focus of this particular console table article!

Now that you’ve gotten your table, the pertinent question is: where should I place it? This is a rather relevant question as it ultimately determines the overall usefulness of your console table, whatever the reason for which you got it. This is a question that should be considered before going to shop for the table. The following will help you determine where to place your console table:

How much space do you have? This will determine the available space that can be spared for your console table and ultimately, the size of the table to go for. If your home is small, you probably will not need a large table and vice versa. Knowing this will help you decide where you can fit in your table.

How best will it complement your home? This is the overall consideration. The console table you chose, wherever you decide to place it, must add (not detract from) to the decorative ambiance of your home.

Having mentioned these, there are a variety of places where you can place your console table and they include: long and roomy hallways, large empty foyers, spacious living rooms and dining rooms, large closets and a host of other places. Deciding where they fit best is a subject of trying out different arrangements and determining where it looks best.

By its very definition – a console table refers to a small table fixed to a wall or designed to be set against a wall – it is evident that crafting your very own console table is a cake-walk. Suitable to be a beginner’s project on account of its easy to follow lines, a console table can turn out to be a dream project. It is a multi-purpose table, available in a variety of shapes, sizes, designs, styles and quality. Fabricated from either wood or glass, its ubiquitous nature lends itself to creative inclinations as no other piece of furnishing does. Simple, yet sophisticated the console table has truly earned its place in every home and heart.

A basic console table has only 9 segments – 4 legs and rails in addition to a top. One can start with a beginner’s toolbox consisting of a healthy mix of portable power tools and hand tools. Besides being easy, the design enables optimum use of everything contained in the woodworking guide. And to top it all, your console table is ready sooner than you think. Just by learning a few basic moves one can hope to be accomplished in the art of creating your very own unique console table. Incredible!!! Not really, until you’ve had a go at it.

A quick sketch to design the shape of the console table – for e.g. legs tall enough to allow one to slip shoes underneath, a low shelf for decorative items and another shelf to hold a few drawers topped with well-sanded untreated wood board. Select wood of correct width and thickness for your console table. Use dowels and a wood drill bit and wood glue to assemble the parts. Cutting the various parts to required length, use a pencil mark to delineate on the uprights where the shelves need to go. A gluing doweling instruction guide to drill holes for the dowels is available.

Squeeze a little glue in the holes of the uprights and insert the dowels. Assemble the uprights by squeezing glue into holed drilled in the shelves. Finally assemble the top board by placing in on top of the uprights. Make sure the console table stands perfectly straight before placing weights. After allowing a standing time of 12 hours, sand all the surfaces and edges of the console table. Order cane drawers or use recycled hardboard drawers and fix them with nail back drawer stops leaving some margin. Choose a finishing say two coats of linseed oil and whoa your console table is ready to use.

Brown Console Table

Making a collection of your own is always a fun and interesting way to spend your time. Many people collect stamps, books, stickers, bottles, caps and generally anything you can imagine. This is not different in any way with console tables. There are many collectors of furniture as such a collection can gain extreme value through time. Moreover, console tables are beautiful pieces of furniture that have existed for many centuries and this is why many people decide to make collections of them.

There are many thing you need to consider if decide to start your own console table collection. If you have already started some years ago, then you probably know most of these stuff anyway but for those who don’t, I think, this article will prove to be very beneficial.

Collections are hard to maintain and they are usually time consuming. You need to consider how much time and money you want to spend for your collection and most importantly you need to make sure that the money you choose to spend is money that you have and are willing to be separated from. I am not saying that there is no way to make money from such an action by no means. If you collect carefully valuable pieces, you could come to a point where your collection is worth a fortune. Much more than you have spent. This of course holds for every kind of collection. The difference here is that there are many bargains out there that no one is considering and that you can take advantage of.
Money however is not always the issue. There are people that just love collecting historic and beautiful pieces of furniture and just do it as a hobby without concern about the value of their collection. Even if this is the case however, again there are many things that you need to consider. You need to make sure that you are not spending more than you have and even if you have enough, you need to make sure that no one is taking advantage of your ignorance. You need to understand that a console table can cost almost anything. The price tag depends on a variety of things such as:

a) Age

b) Quality

c) Condition

d) Design and Manufacturing

e) Historic Value

f) Sentimental Value

I will make sure to explain each of the above separately in my next articles so that you can have a clear idea about what you should be careful of when you are trying to get valuable pieces for you collection. It is very important for you to understand that, even if you think it is just a piece of furniture, a console table can have an extremely high value both in terms of money and in terms of historic significance.
